Scoring Points

Points are allocated to riders based on their real-life performance in each event.

Points are awarded in three areas: Finishing Positions, Assists and Breakaways.

There are three different race categories, based on the relative importance of each event, for which a different amount of points are awarded.

Race Category One includes all five monuments - the historic one-day races which every rider dreams of winning, along with the Elite Men's World Championship Road Race.

Race Category Two includes the remaining leading classics and World Tour races on the schedule, such as La Fleche Wallonne, Strade Bianche and Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa.

Race Category Three includes the so-called semi-classics, which may not have the overall reputation of the historic monuments of the cycling season, but nevertheless represent key prizes for a rider (and team) to win.

For the full list of races with their scoring category, please visit the race schedule page.

The points awarded in each scoring area are shown in the sections below.

Finishing Positions

Points for Finishing Positions make up the major amount of points available, and are awarded to the top 30 classified finishers in each race, using the following scoring table.

Assists (Team Mate Points)

Points for Assists are awarded to the real-life team-mates of riders who finish in the top three, to recognise the efforts that go into putting a team's rider into a winning position.

For all races except the World Championship Elite Mens Road Race and European Championships Road Race, assist points are awarded to teammate within the same professional cycling team. For the World Championships and European Championships Road Race, assist points are awarded based on national teams only.

Assist points are awarded as follows:

PositionRace Category OneRace Category TwoRace Category Three
Team Mate 1st906045
Team Mate 2nd604030
Team Mate 3rd302015

In order to score assist points, a rider must start the race - they do not have to complete the course.

Note that riders who finish in the top three do not score assist points for their own finishing position.

Breakaway Points

Points for Breakaways are awarded to the riders who animate the race in its early stages and also during the crunch moments leading up the the finale.

There are four nominated Breakaway Points Sectors during each event, where the riders in the leading group on the road will all score points.

The first Breakaway Points Sector is based at 50% race distance.

The second Breakaway Points Sector is based at 50km to go.

The third Breakaway Points Sector is based at 20km to go.

The fourth Breakaway Points Sector is based at 10km to go.

The following points are scored at each breakaway points zone.

PositionRace Category OneRace Category TwoRace Category Three
In Lead Group at Breakway Points Zone 1 (50% race distance)604530
In Lead Group at Breakway Points Zone 2 (50 km to go)604530
In Lead Group at Breakway Points Zone 3 (20km to go)604530
In Lead Group at Breakway Points Zone 4 (10km to go)604530

For the purposes of points scoring, a "leading group" of riders is a group of 20 riders or less, with a gap of more than five seconds to the next rider or group of riders on the road.

Velogames will review video footage and race reports to ensure an accurate distribution of Breakaway Points, but in all cases the decision of Velogames is final.
